Looked After Children- Health Service

  • The service covers all children and young people looked after by Walsall Council (living in/out of borough) 0-21years as need dictates.
  • The team facilitates statutory health assessments within agreed timescales for looked after children utilising universal health services. They also complete health assessments for children living in Walsall placed there by other Local Authorities.
  • Offer a programme of training to foster carer’s, induction for health and social care professionals and specific health needs training packages to a range of professionals.
  • Offer expert advice and support to a range of professionals regarding the health of looked after young people.
  • Ensure health needs are assessed and responded to appropriately and quickly to reduce health inequalities and address issues regarding substance misuse, sexual health and teenage pregnancy within these high risk groups.
  • Work closely with partner agencies to ensure that outcomes both physically and mentally are maximised for these groups.
  • Work with young people so that they are ready and supported for adult living as they leave care or released from juvenile institutions.
  • Work with care leavers, providing health advice, quit smoking programme, support registering and attending GP and other health appointments as required, support care leavers who become pregnant, ensuring appropriate services are involved and input into a parenting group specifically for Looked After Children and Care Leavers.
