Other notes

Our business began life in Leeds because of a personal experience. A close family member who is disabled, works part-time, loves to travel and is an active member of her local community, faced difficulties coping alone after she fell ill last year. Not living close by, my husband and I were unable to provide the day-to-day support we desperately wanted to. Instead, we tried to help her find suitable care staff who could come to support her everyday lifestyle, including taking a shower in the morning, helping with meal times, sometimes staying overnight (awake) and driving her to her community clubs and meetings.

We had such great difficulty in finding the right person:

  1. If the skills matched what we were looking for, the personality didn't. For example, some care assistants seemed too over-familiar and our aunt wanted someone who would let her feel independent and be less of a 'carer', more of a physical support.
  2. Other times, the price-per-hour we were paying seemed high and if the care assistant was good, we wanted more money to go towards the staff member, rather than, let’s say, to an agent.
  3. Finally, it was always taking so long to find and meet new care staff, sometimes we were waiting over a week but we needed someone in more quickly than that.

This is how the idea of 1 UKCIL was born. My husband, who is an IT engineer developed 1 UKCIL - a simple, online, software service that connects you, the employer, to care assistants quickly, easily and affordably.
